500 A Rough Deal explores the difficulties facing Guyana, a
small developing country in South America, very much
dependent on agriculture for its survival. Rice and sugar,
the two most important sectors of Guyana's economy, are
subject to the vagaries of the global markets, and the too
often un-development friendly trade policies of the EU and
US, which place farmers in developing countries in
extremely precarious positions. But family farmers from
the developing countries, like Ireland, also find
themselves struggling in light of these trade policies,
which favour corportate agriculture. Paddy Harrington, a
farmer from Cork, travels to Guyana to meet sugar-cane
cutters in the plantations, rice farmers and millers, and
Amerindian cocoa growers in a heavily forested region near
the Venezuelan border. He finds many differences between
farmers in Ireland and Guyana, but also discovers that
they have much more in common than one might think...
